A lot of people use baking soda for different reasons. It can be very useful in the garden. It can be used to promote healthy plants, raise the soil acidity level, prevent fungal growth, and many more.

Baking soda will also be useful when trying to prevent pests like bugs, slugs, rabbits, and rats from invading your garden.

Apart from the ones mentioned above, you can also use the bathing soda for different sanitary and cleaning purposes. Furniture in your garden can also be cleaned with baking soda.

In this post, I’ll show you different ways you can use baking soda in your garden.

Keeping Your Plants Healthy

  • Keep your potted plants always fresh

With baking soda, your plants can remain fresh. All you have to do is apply it to your plants before transplanting them to pots. You just have to spread the baking soda over the bottom of the thin layer. This will keep the plants from dying.

  • Reduce weeds and crabgrass in the garden

If you have lots of crabgrass and weeds in your garden, one of the best ways to get rid of them is the use of a baking soda mixture. You just have to get them wet by spraying water with a hose or spray bottle. After doing this, sprinkle your baking soda over them.

  • Natural fertilizers

Baking soda can also be used to make fertilizers for your garden. To make them, use the steps you’ll see below.

  • You would need one spoon of Epsom salt, a 5 liter of water gallon, and a full spoon of baking soda.
  • Pour a mixture of the two ingredients mentioned above into a gallon of water.
  • Apply the end product the same way you usually water your garden

If your plants are brownish or withering, this mixture can also rejuvenate them. You also have to check online to see if the plants in your garden can tolerate fertilizers.

  • Homemade plant fumicide

With baking soda and water, you will be able to make plant femicide. If your plant has fungal diseases, here are the steps to follow.

  • Get a gallon of distilled water (at least 4 liters) and four tablespoons of baking soda.
  • Mix both of them and pour them in a sprayable bottle
  • Sprinkle it on the plants you notice have the fungal disease
  • Test the PH level of the soil

Search for a damp area on the soil, sprinkle the soda, wet it with water, and observe the reaction of the soil.

If you notice any bubbling in the soil, it simply means that the soil is acidic and cannot support healthy plant growth. If you want to raise the soil PH level, you can apply powdered or ground lime to it.

  • Tomato sweetening supplement

Baking soda can be used to sweeten tomatoes; here is how to do it.

  • Get some baking soda and spray it in the area of the plant’s soil
  • The soil will absorb the baking soda, which will lower its acidity level. This, in turn, makes your tomatoes sweeter

Preserving Your Flowers

There are different ways of preserving flowers, but using baking soda is one of the most efficient. Mix the soda in a jar of distilled water. Dip the end of the flowers into the mixture. This will prevent them from wilting quickly.

Getting Rid of Pests

Eliminate Ants

If ants are a major problem in your garden, a mixture of baking soda will completely solve the issue. Get sugar and baking soda into a container (at least four spoons), mix these two together.

Locate the ant’s hill or hideouts, then sprinkle the mixture there. If the ants eat this powdered mixture (which they will), they will die immediately.

You can use little water while mixing them. This will enable them to clump together.

  • Natural pesticides

Mix a teaspoon of baking soda, a cup of water, and a cup of olive oil. Get a sprayable bottle. Spray the mixture on the plants. These insects will be discouraged from going close to that area.

  • Get rid of cabbage worms.

Baking soda can also be used to preserve your unfinished cabbage. Sprinkle a mixture of flour and baking soda over it to keep it fresh. It will also prevent it from being infested by worms. To make this last long, you need to apply it regularly.

  • Keep rabbits at bay

Rabbits can invade your garden and eat your fruits and vegetables. A good way to prevent them is by using baking soda. Spread baking soda around the plants. Ensure that the soda you have sprayed will be visible from a distance. This will keep the rabbits far away.

This process should be repeated after a while or immediately after it rains.

  • Eliminate slugs

Baking soda can get rid of slugs in a matter of seconds. When you see any of these slugs, you can apply them directly to their body. This will kill them within seconds.

  • Root out insect infestation

A pesticide spray will eliminate insects, but there is a stronger and quicker mixture that can eliminate insects. Use the following steps to prepare this mixture.

  • Get two tablespoons of baking soda, a tablespoon of olive oil, and a full spoon of liquid soap.
  • Mix these three kinds of stuff together in a sprayable bottle. Spray it on those ant man-infested places in your garden
  • Apply this mixture every three days if you can.

For cleaning purposes

  • Get rid of the bad smell.

Decaying plants and unusable produce will be in your garden. It can really get the place messed up. Waste can be used to fertilize the soil, but before doing so, you will have to reduce the smell.

Sprinkle a few spoonfuls of baking soda over these wastes to reduce the damp stink.

  • Garden equipment

Baking soda can also be used to clean different equipment in the garden. A number of this equipment includes shears, clay pots, and garden furniture, among others. You can pour baking soda in a wet rag and clean the surface of the equipment.
