In a general view, frogs are considered very harmless; this is partly because it reduces the number of insects in the environment. But this is an exception to the species of frogs that are poisonous. In this post, you’re going to learn the right steps to getting rid of frogs in your environment.
In cutting down the population of frogs in the environment, bringing in a few predators like snakes, weasels, and cats might help. Also, cleaning up areas where frogs normally gather like still water and ponds will make them stay away. But before doing so, you have to check if the laws in your area permit getting rid of frogs.
Follow these steps in doing away with frogs:
Step 1 of 4
Getting Ready to Do Away with Frogs
1. Make an inquiry about the laws in your vicinity.
While some places allow it, in many parts of the world, it is considered a crime to kill a non-invasive kind of frog. On the other hand, some types of frogs are very invasive, and it is considered illegal to let them go back into the environment once you have gotten hold of them.
- Before going ahead to do anything, talk to the authorities in charge of wildlife and local fish in your area, so you will be given directives on how to do away with them.
- If you are not able to confirm if the frog is a native one, take pictures of it to the wildlife and local fish authorities for it to be identified.
2. Try to identify the type of frog you want to do away with.
Trying to find out the type of frogs you want to do away with will not only make it easier for you, but it will prevent you from doing anything outside the law, as some types of frogs are protected by the law.
There are some types of frogs that are protected under the law, and killing them is illegal; some are listed below:
- Coqui frogs that have gone outside their natural environment in Puerto Rico
- Bullfrogs that are outside their native environment in eastern North America
- Cuban tree frogs that outside their natural habitat, which is in Cuba
- Cane toads outside their natural environment in central and south America.
3. Don’t try to harm native frogs.
If you discover that some of the frogs in your environment are of native species, it will be a wise decision to leave them alone. Frogs are very important to the ecosystem; they reduce the number of insects in the environment.
Even if the native frogs in your environment happen to be poisonous, you should avoid killing them.
- If you cannot keep them away from coming close to where you live, it is best to shut your doors very well to avoid them coming in.
Step 2 of 4
Removing Their Food and Shelter
1. Clear your weeds and bushy plants.
Bushy plants and overgrown grasses can be a perfect place to hide for frogs; by getting rid of these bushy plants and grasses that have overgrown, you will make the place inhabitable for frogs.
2. During the night, put off the outside lightings.
Lights do not repel insects or frogs, and rather it attracts them; so for you to avoid this, ensure to put your lightings outside your house so as to prevent the overpopulation of frogs in your environment.
3. Use insect repellant.
Chasing insects and flies in your environment will prevent frogs from coming close; this is because frogs mainly feed on insects, and so to avoid them, ensure to get rid of the insects.
- The best and easiest way to get rid of insects is by using insecticide; they are very affordable and equally effective.
4. Remove food for pets from outside the house.
Frogs normally steal foods that are meant for pets like cats and dogs; those foods may be remnants of a large part. To keep frogs away from your house, ensure to keep food meant for pets inside.
5. Build a fence if you do not have one.
If you do not have a fence on your property or where you live, ensure to build one; it will help in preventing frogs from getting access to your property or house.
Step 3 of 4
Using repellant against frogs
1. Use a natural and chemical substance to repel them.
In eradicating frogs from your environment, using both chemical and natural means will be effective. One way to repel them is by using chemical spray on them.
- For natural repellant, you can use salt by spreading it around your property; the salt is harmful to the toes of the frog, and so it will be a perfect repellant to use
2. Get natural predators to repel the frogs.
Lots of predators enjoy eating different types of frogs, so when you bring some of these predators like cats into your property, you will be sure of removing frogs completely from your environment.
- Ensure to introduce the predators of the specific type of frog you are trying to repel.
Step 4 of 4
Removing the Frogs Physically
1. Get an exterminator to do the job for you.
If you are not successful in getting rid of these frogs, it is advisable that you get the services of an exterminator. They are professionals, and getting rid of the frogs will be done swiftly. You can hire an exterminator for a very affordable rate; the advantage of getting one is that you are sure of completely getting rid of the frogs.
2. Get traps for the frogs.
When the frog gets access to your house and property, and you are unable to remove them, you can get a trap and place it in a strategic place in your house; it will catch them in no time.
3. Use a net.
In getting rid of frogs, a more efficient way to do so is by getting a net that has a handle you can hold. This net can help you catch those frogs that hide in water and even in the grasses.
- After catching them, the best thing to do is to take them to a nearby pond.
