If you’re preparing a greenhouse to grow plants for the first time, then you are in the right place. Preparing and laying your greenhouse is a fun-filled experience. It basically involves preparing a space where you can properly grow your plants and flowers.

The steps you would need are all mentioned in the following parts of this post.

Preparing the Layout

  • Mount your tables or benches along the walls

The first step towards preparing your greenhouse is by setting your benches and stands. If the branches are far too wide, you will not be able to reach some parts of it when maintaining.

Get benches that are not more than 0.9cm wide and place them by the sides of the greenhouse. If you plan on keeping your plants on the ground, their rows should not be 0.9cm.

  • Give a space of at least 48cm between rows.

No matter how small the greenhouse is, you will still need room to move around it. So when arranging your greenhouse, remember to leave a space of at least 48cm between benches, Tables, and other furniture. This will leave a more comfortable pathway for you as the owner.

If the equipment and furniture in your greenhouse are really much, you should leave at least 61cm of space between each of the rows. If you can’t leave space between this furniture, you can consider using rows for the planting pots.

  • Big benches should be placed in the middle of the greenhouse

If you have big benches that are up to 1.8cm, it will be good to place them side by side in the middle of the greenhouse. When you’ve done this, it will not be difficult to reach the center of the table when you need to.

If you are not using big benches in the middle, you should also use the same measurements when placing pots on the ground. If the rows of the pots are more than 2.1cm wide, it will be difficult to reach the center.

Setting up Plants

  • Place high light indoor plants by the sides.

Depending on its position, sunlight may be much more in some places than others. You need to identify your plants with high light requirements. After identifying them, set up benches along the sunniest part of the greenhouse and then place the plants on them.

The plants can be placed on the ground or on the table. But in order to maximize space and bring them closer to the sunlight, you need to use a bench.

  • Place plants that are taller on short benches or floor beds

If some of the plants you are growing are tall, place them on the ground or on shorter benches. This will allow them to have plenty of space above them. It will also give them a lot of room to flourish.

  • Prepare a small space for outdoor plants.

To have more space in your greenhouse, prepare a section where you can keep your outdoor plants. This can be on a bench or on a portion of the floor.

  • Place light-sensitive plants along with darker parts

Identify those plants that require a few hours of indirect light. Place them along with the darker parts of the greenhouse. If you are using a heat source in your greenhouse, you should place them in cold areas.

  • Seedlings should be placed in warm zones.

If you grow lots of plants from seeds, warm zones will be perfect for keeping seed trays.

  • Each pot should have at least 15cm of space between them

Your pots should have 15cm space separating them. By doing this, you will be giving each plant more access to sunlight. You will also be able to attend to one plant without messing up the other.

Growing and Working Areas

  • Set up a section to store your tools

When working in a greenhouse, it would be better to have easy access to your tools. This is why it is important to place them where you can easily access them. Set separate storage for insecticide, warehouse soils, nutrients, and fertilizers.

Your trowels, cutting tools, and gloves should also be kept together in a separate location, preferably near your potting bench.

  • Prepare hot and cold zones.

If you have a heat source like a heater connected to your greenhouse, you can use it to keep the place warm in the winter. Some plants also require a cool period, so the heater should be fixed on a particular area in your greenhouse.

  • Prepare a separate bench for propagation.

It is proper to set up a separate bench where you can always do your propagation. This way, you will not end up with shards of woods and soil dust all over the place. If your greenhouse is small, you can decide to use a potting bench for this.

  • Prepare a quarantine area zone for your plants.

If you have a greenhouse that is big enough, you can use an enclosed entryway as a quarantine zone for your new breeds of plants. If your greenhouse is small, you can decide to prepare a miniature greenhouse where the plants will be quarantined. This can be built next to your main structure.

Tips for Saving Space

  • Carry your compost pile or gravel outside the greenhouse

If compost is one of your fertilizing agents, you can move them outside to free up space. The same thing applies to your gravel. If you use gravel to insulate plants or cover the ground, you can store them outside.

  • Shelves should be placed behind benches.

Freestanding benches take up a lot of space in the greenhouse. A good way to save up space with them is to place them behind occupied benches. This way, you can set plants that need indirect light on the front of the shelves.

You can also purchase benches that have built-in shelves in them. With this, your greenhouse will be kept simple.

  • Purchase benches with wheels

In order to make arrangements easier in your greenhouse, you can get benches with wheels to place plants. This will be a better option than stationary benches and regular tables. It will also make it easier to move the plants around.

My wrapping up

Setting up your greenhouse can be really fun. As long as your plants are doing well, you can decide to set them up in whatever way you like. If you have different layouts apart from the ones mentioned in this post, then go ahead and do it.
